Josh McDougall Artist Statement
The craft of the portrait, the process required to capture the essence of a person, has been a lifelong fascination of mine. Over the last 4 years I have used hand cut stencils and spraypaint to render the likeness of a person.

The creation of a stencil is a complicated process which involves a combination of photography, digital, drawing & hours of x-acto knifing. The end result is a blend of my hand drawn style meeting the unpredictable element of spraypaint.
Creating the likeness of someone using this design process brings me a personal satisfaction which is unmatched by other mediums. I can pull on my favorite experiences in graphic design, experimental methods for screenprinting and illustrative drawing to influence a stencil. The method allows a flexibility which lends itself well to generating custom portraits for clients. Any old photograph can be remembered as a uniquely stylized portrait using this technique.

ArtWalk, Giveaway & Holiday Open House!

We have so much happening this week at ARTifacts, it is hard to keep up with everything – so bare with me a bit!  Also, make sure you are watching our FB page for all our new arrivals.  It is just so easy to upload photos of new things as they arrive into the shop – and if you want first shot at them – you better “LIKE” us on FB to keep track of us!  I am going to post several new arrivals later today!

ARTWALK – this coming Thursday – we will feature the stylize graphic art of Josh McDougall and the sewing talents of Jessica Clarks.  More on Josh & Jessica tomorrow and Thursday.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE – this weekend!  Yes, I know – that is craziness!  We just had Halloween, now it is time for the winter holidays!  Madness – but it is indeed time.  So to get you into the holiday mood, most of the downtown businesses will be hosting their Holiday Open Houses this Saturday from 10am to 6pm.  We will have demonstrations happening through out the day, refreshments, and more!

Featured Artist–Charlotte Nelms

Charlotte Nelms was born and reared in Oregon yet, as military spouse has lived and continued her art studies all over the North American and European continents. She received her Associate of Arts Degree from City Colleges of Chicago, Europe. Recently, returned from Germany she has chosen to settle in Clarksville and is excited about the art opportunities in the area.

She has always been interested in art, even from an early age. “I can’t remember a time when I did not do some form of art. My dad, as a trimmerman for Boise Cascade Paper Mill, brought us kids all the paper we could use. I would sit for hours and make paper doll clothes, pictures or paper crafts glued together with flour and water paste.

As a child, I was always on the floor in the middle of some kind of artsy mess.”

Charlotte has worked in various mediums including graphite, oil, watercolor and pastel. One artist that influenced her to explore oil and pastel painting was the American Impressionist, Mary Cassatt.

Cassatt’s style and themes of children and the joys of childhood appear in Charlotte’s portrait work. Water is also a theme reoccurring frequently in her love of pastel and watercolor landscape. Whether it is placid or rushing, reflective or totally abstract, it inspires her. “When I am painting water I am painting reflected light because water has no color of its own. It has its own life by reflecting the life around it.”

The past thirty years, have brought Charlotte numerous awards and prizes for her work in Canada, California, Germany and Texas.

This one is my personal favorite….although the Goose at the top – she just brought in – LOVE that too.  This one just….moves me!

First Thursday ArtWalk

Featured Artist–Gabriele Wardeiner

So I have been trying to post this update for Gabriele since the beginning of the month, and for some reason, the slide show software I use doesn’t want to let me.  So here is a different slide show with a different software – cuz I just can’t fight it anymore!! 

“Art should be serious fun” sort of sums up the way Gabriele Wardeiner approaches her encounters with pencils and brushes. Mostly self trained she just enjoys drawing, painting and trying new things on paper, board and even metal. She is also a certified “pack rat”, which comes in handy creating the hundreds of truly unique, special greeting  cards you see in her booth. Rounding up the offerings are some interesting antiques, “almost” antiques and 14 K gold and silver jewelry.

Aigilean Designs - Featured Artist for August

Aigilean Designs, by Erin Slauson, is our featured artist for August. I really enjoy Erin's pieces - I love the raw look and feel of the raku pieces. Do you know what Raku is? I didn't either until Erin moved into ARTifacts. She explained it to me.

Here is a lesson for you! Taken from www.wisegeek.com:
"Raku pottery is created with a specific ceramic firing process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. With raku pottery, the piece is first bisque fired. Then, it is glazed and undergoes a raku firing process. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800°F (about 982°C).
In order to complete the firing process, the raku pottery must remain in the kiln for approximately 30 minutes. The raku pottery is then removed from the kiln using specially designed raku tongs. While the raku pottery piece is still hot and glowing, it is placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire. "



You can imagine the amount of work involved in getting this kind of pottery art mastered. I just love Erin's results!

She also features her wheel thrown and handbuilt works in both the raku and stoneware.

She offers all these items and more:
Nonfunctional bowls, food safe bowls, cups, vases, mugs, sculpture and masks.
